Grandma’s Swedish Meatballs

Swedish meatballs, thank you Grandma!! This recipe has been in our family for years. Whenever we get together up north at my parents house, we request my grandma to come over and make her infamous meatballs and she ALWAYS follows through.

When my mom makes these Swedish meatballs for my dad and his workers, they dummy the entire dish. In fact, one of them has the record for eating 15 meatballs …. in one sitting. WOW! They are so good and the sauce makes the perfect gravy. Our girls love these Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes. It’s one hearty and delicious meal that we love to make together. You could also put this with some rice or egg noodles. This recipe for Swedish meatballs is so easy to prep and put together. Yes, I know they have to chill for awhile & cook in the oven for some time but it is so worth it.

  • 1 pound of hamburger

  • onion (minced or chopped)

  • uncooked rice (Jasmine)

  • soda cracker crumbs (saltines crushed up)

  • milk

  • salt

  • pepper

  • poultry seasoning

  • dutch oven or baking dish

  • for the gravy : 2 cans cream of mushroom soup, hot water & kitchen bouquet browning & seasoning sauce

LET’S GET TO ROLLING SOME MEATBALLS!

Place 1 pound of hamburger in a medium sized mixing bowl. Add in onion, rice, soda cracker crumbs, salt, pepper, milk and poultry seasoning. Mix all of it together and shape into firm size balls (golf ball size). Place in the fridge for 2 hours or the freezer for about 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Now, once the Swedish meatballs are firm and you take them out. Fry them up in the Dutch oven.

Once all the sides are cooked, they are ready to go in the oven. But first, in a separate bowl whisk together 2 cans cream of mushroom soup and 1 1/2 cups of hot water. Pour this mixture over the meatballs and sprinkle on top a couple splashes of the kitchen bouquet browning and seasoning sauce. Cook in the oven for 1 1/2-2hours. Meatballs should be 160 degrees. Take out of the oven and serve with your favorite side. Preferably mashed potatoes… Time to eat!

You can prep these ahead of time and cook them the following night for supper. This Swedish meatball recipe is a crowd pleaser, perfect for serving a large group of people or just your family of 4! This recipe takes time but it is very easy. Give it a shot, you will not be disappointed. These also make a great meal to serve at Thanksgiving or Christmas!
